How to work with Baltic
Amber
Baltic amber is a very soft "stone" and easy to work with.
Grinding: The surface of the amber piece could be grinded with wet sandpaper
you can buy in every homedepot.
Start with 100 or 120 grit to grind away the surface and make the form
of your desire.
Use 400 grit to grind away the heavy scratches , than use 800 Gri t
for the finishing.
Now your amber piece looks tuff and is ready for polishing.
Polishing: The amber piece could be polished with toothpaste. Take a
piece of cotton and a dip of tothpaste and polish the piece as long as
the amberstart to shines.
Beewax and furniture or car politure will work also.
Kindly do not use any kind of oil.
Cutting : To cut or drill amber it is important to have not fractured
pieces or pieces with layers
to prevent that the piece will breake in several smal ones.
A fine metal saw is usefull to cut the amber pieces.
Amber breaks like glas , that means do not use pressure
during sawing or make heavy movements.
Make sure that the sawing blade is stabile.
Glueing: Broken amber pieces could be fixed with super glue.
Drilling: Amber could be drilled with a regular metal driller,but should
be drilled from
both sides to prevent that the opposite of the hole breaks out.
